Nanjing, China
2004

"...working in China at such a massive scale with such dramatic social changes afoot was amazing, coming from a country where we are trying to protect a unique lifestyle..."

Following a Federal Government sponsored trade mission to China in 2003, Lippmann Partnership were offered the role of masterplanners and designers of a 32 hectare site on the outskirts of Nanjing.

The Hua Xuan District project is the first stage of a multi-stage urban development accommodates 200,000 residents within a number of village precincts.

The first stage incorporates 240,000sq.m of residential space and 27,000sq.m of community facilities. There is also provision for schools, commercial and retail facilities within the 430,000sq.m construction area.

The existing river is extended through the site to create more desirable aspect to the residential units. It was also proposed as a heat sink to cool the building forms during the hot season. A series of 'housing clusters' were developed up to 6 stories in height to provide different housing types, responding to different marketing objectives, site features and community expectations.
