SCEGGS

Darlinghurst
2007

“...schools located in the city offer students an urban experience which can be of tremendous value to their growth as individuals...”

The SCEGGS redevelopment was a complex brief to provide a range of new teaching spaces within very tight confines on their Darlinghurst site. Panoramic city views are available to the west and an abrupt scale change occurs between the school and the smaller terrace houses adjacent.

The new facility combines art, science and DT into one central building with a car park below. Although the sizes and requirement of these teaching areas is different, the design concept relies on a standardized class room module which is changeable and expandable and has the benefit of a northern orientation and external elevated terraces.

Slicing through the centre of the facility is a large vertical atrium acting as a social space for children to move through and congregate in. A new multi-purpose hall is situated at the top of the site addressing a central landscaped courtyard.
